Patient Expectations

Mutual commitments for effective and sustainable healing

Dr. Houtan NMD

—What patients can expect of me—

I take a great deal of pride in my work and pour a lot of love into it. Prior to your Initial Consult, I take 30-60 minutes (sometimes far more, depending on the case) to review the intake forms, labs/imaging/documents that you send, conduct research on your case if necessary, and write up a preliminary plan. We adjust the plan during our consult based on what we discuss and learn.

The same pattern holds true for follow-ups: I always thoroughly review your past charts and labs prior to appointments, and pre-write the plan that I intend on executing/tweaking during our consult.

In addition to my prep time, I spend an average of 15 hours/week working behind the scenes on lab reviews, research, education, business, and communicating with patients outside our official meetings.

I take my work very seriously, and I believe in going above and beyond for my patients. I also strive to be as efficient as possible, so I am always fully prepared for our appointments. This allows me to have discussions with you that help me get to the core of your problems and concerns. To me, this is how we approach true root-cause medicine and ultimately, true healing. In my office, there are no shortcuts.

—What I’ll expect of you—

  1. Have patience

I don’t practice fast-paced medicine. When working with you, I apply a bio-regulatory, physiologically-appropriate, slow and sustainable style of medicine that fits your unique needs. My style of practice is exceedingly deep, and I will always choose to uphold my excellence in care. Frankly, the modern patient is far sicker than patients were in the past, which means that our approach must be deep, involved, and individualized. I find that it works best to move slowly, work on one thing at a time, and take breaks when needed. Practically speaking, doing too much at once also burns a hole in the wallet which makes the process even more unsustainable.

  1. Have an understanding of the timeline

This relates to the first point. True healing takes time, and it often takes more time than you may expect. There is always more work upfront, so you should expect more changes to nutrition/lifestyle, more supplements, and more money to be spent within the first 6-9 months that we work together. And to be perfectly frank, true healing is a lifelong process that never ends! However, as you see results and feel excited about your improved health, the process becomes easier and more enjoyable.

  1. Have courage

We all hold on to baggage and debris that doesn’t serve us. If you want to truly heal, you must let go of that which is holding you back and keeping you sick. This is often a mindset, an idea/story, a person, or an activity/job/environment.

  1. Have trust

I do expect patients to trust me to do my job and to take care of them as I would take care of a loved one. I will always recommend treatments that are necessary, safe, and effective, and I will communicate and educate you appropriately regarding your treatments. Patients who let their guard down, work openly with me, and trust my expertise routinely experience the best outcomes.

  1. Have a sense of commitment

Above all, I expect my patients to put in the work. This means taking your supplements, applying the nutritional/lifestyle changes, and following up appropriately. Your healing takes plenty of time, work, and perseverance on both our parts. One of my greatest satisfactions is to see you achieve optimal health because you’re as invested in your lifelong health as I am. Dedicated patients are my kind of patients!
